OUR BEACHES, OUR SEA: Heritage of Fishing Communities, Usufruct of All Citizens is the report of the Janakeeya Padana Samithi (JPS) constituted in November 2022 by the ‘Janakeeya Samara Samithi’ to study the impact of Vizhinjam International Sea Port on the Beaches, Coastal Sea, Biodiversity, and the Livelihood of Fishing Communities in Thiruvananthapuram District. The report of the JPS was released by the eminent historian and environment scholar Ramachandra Guha on the World Fisheries Day-21 November 2023 at the Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram. Dr. Thomas J. Netto, Archbishop of the Latin Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram presided over the function.
The JPS is chaired by Dr. K.V. Thomas, former Scientist and Group Head, National Centre for Earth Science Studies, Thiruvananthapuram and comprised of Dr. John Kurien, Dr. Terry Machado, Dr. K.G. Thara, Mr. Probir Banerjee, Ms. Sarita Fernandez and Dr. Johnson Jament.
We invite the public to explore the report and gain a holistic understanding of the genuine concerns of fishing and coastal communities and citizens at large, about the consequences of the development of the container port at Vizhinjam.
